Grossarl: Kitzstein (Gabel) (2,037 m)
You go up from the Sonneggbrücke or the parking space Breitenebenalm through the forest to the Breitenebenalm, which is not managed in the winter.
You continue through the forest to the Karseggalm, which is not farmed in winter. You go up until the ridge. The last meters to the top are very steep, so maybe it is better to hike to the summit without skis. From the Kitzstein (Gabel) you have a wonderful view, on one side to the Hohe Tauern and on the other side to the Hochkönig, the Tennengebirge and the Hagengebirge as well as the Dachsteingebirge.
Along the ascent, you will find many beautiful descents. Especially at the slope above the Karseggalm there may be a real good powder.
The tour is a scenic, moderate ski tour and is possible from November to April (sufficient snow is necessary). Coming from St. Johann, it is also the first tour to reach (together with the Penkkopf) and is a perfect tour to start with. Even in case of bad weather, the tour is possible, but it would be advisable to do without the summit.
If you combine this tour with the ski tour on the Penkkopf, you have a nice day trip.

ASCENT: You go up from the Breitenebenalm parking space to the Breitenebenalm, 1,420 m and towards the Karseeggalm, 1,603 m. Before the Karseggalm, leave the forest on the right at the edge of the forest. After a small valley you go over open terrain to the ridge. The last part (about 100 meters) to the summit of the Kitzstein (Gabel), 2,037 m, is very steep. So, it is recommended to go up to the summit without skis (climb about 2 h).
