Beautiful round trip to the Schuhflicker, one of the few limestone massifs in the Grossarl Valley, and the Schuhflickersee , a mountain lake.

In the district Unterberg you go up by car to the Lainholz farm. You can still go by car right up to Aualm on the forest road, then you haven't to hike up there. Otherwise you hike on the shortcuts through the forest or along the forest road to the Aualm. Here you can taste self-made delicacies.
You continue to the Liechtensteinkopf. From here you have a wonderful view to Grossarl. You hike further on the ridge to the Aukopf. This summit cross was built up in honour of the victims of the 2 world wars. You hike further on the ridge to the Schuhflicker, which is one of 2 limestone mountains in Grossarl. According to the legend, two cobblers were petrified here on a Sunday when they have chosen to go on the mountain, instead of spending the Sunday morning at church. Therefore there are 2 peaks of the Schuhflicker.
There are several climbing routes to the Arlspitze, which is the first peak of the Schuhflicker. For the last part to the Schuhflicker you have to be free of giddiness and you have to have surefootedness. If you are eg. not free of giddiness you haven't to climb up the Schuhflicker, you can hike straightly to the Austuhl.
From the Schuhflicker you have a very nice view to the Schuhflickersee . It is noteworthy that there is no access and no outlet to the lake, the water level remains constant. According to the legend, it is connected with the Tappenkarsee in Kleinarl. A wheel which felt into the Tappenkarsee should have been found in the Schuhflickersee.

The water of the Schuhflickersee is quite cold. But there swim some small fish. You hike back to the Aualm. Here you can enjoy delicious self-made products. The children have fun on the playground.

Author’s recommendation

Sunrises on the Liechtensteinkopf or even on the Schuhflicker are marvellous.
