The Salzburger Almenweg is a long-distance hike through the Pongauer mountain world. This hiking path is under the motto "From hut to hut on the trail of the gentian. The 17th stage from the Draugsteinalmen to the Ellmaualm bears the name: "Broad valley basin, rustic huts and meadows in bloom".

After a delicious alpine breakfast on the Ellmaualm the trail leads to the Henerbichlalm (closed). TIP: Take a little detour along path no. 62 to the Trögseen (small mountain lakes).

The path continues through the Spatkar, the Spatalmen to the Kleinwildalm (both closed). From the Kartörl to the Spatalmen you can enjoy a fantastic view to the Hochkönig and the Tennen- and Hagengebirge. After the Kleinwildalm (closed) the descent to the Grosswildalm starts. Here the people from the mountain hut are already awaiting you with delicacies from their own production.

Now, the way leads along the forestry road to the Karseggalm. The Karseggalm is probably one of the most rustic huts in the whole Alpine area and with its 400 years it is one of the oldest.

If you enter the hut, you are immediately surprised. The floor inside the montain hut is made out of loam and bark. It can be that the "kitchen" is full of smoke. Here, as most people cannot imagine, there is an open fire place. A specialty from Grossarltal is made here: The Knetkäse. Once a week you can watch the dairy farmer at the production of the typical Sauerkäse. Next to the fire place, a ladder is leaning. If you climb up there, you will be immediately surprised: There are no beds on this mountain hut, here you will sleep in the hay!

Beside the Sauerkäse, there is homemade bread, butter, sausages, bacon ... A glass of fresh buttermilk. This is followed by a selfmade schnapps.

You hike furhter to the Unterwandalm. Sometimes you can listen to music on this hut. The man of the Unterwandalm plays on his concertina, while you enjoy the delicious snack and the children are around at the playground or in the petting zoo with the rabbits and guinea pigs.

You continue on a forestry road to the Muggenfeldalm (closed) and to the Maurachalm. Now you have reached the northernmost alp within Grossarltal and the Salzburger Almenweg leads to St. Johann and further to the Sonntagskogel and to the Grafenbergalm in Wagrain.

Accommodation possibilities: Unterandalm, Kreistenalm

You can hike down from those mountain huts to the valley if it necessary.

Author’s recommendation

From the Ellmaualm you have a variation over the mountains to the Maurachalm. Ascend along path no. 62, then 64 to the Gründegg, 2,168 m (approx. 1 h), continue along the path nr. 67 to the Penkkopf, 2,011 m (about 1 h) and finally on path No. 72 to the Kitzstein, 2,037 m (about 1 1/2 h). Descent to the Maurachalm or continue along route No. 712 to the Grafenbergbahn. If you take the variation of the Salzburg Almenweg on the peaks, you will be rewarded all day with a wonderful panorama view.
