The Salzburg Almenweg is a long-distance hike through the Pongauer mountain world. This hiking path is under the motto "From hut to hut on the trail of the gentian. The 16th stage from the Draugsteinalmen to the Ellmaualm bears the name: "Around the Draugstein - alpine pathway through Ellmautal".

After a delicious alpine breakfast on one of the two Draugsteinalmen, you will hike to the Filzmoossattel. Directly at the Filzmoossattel is a particularly beautifully designed gentian, which accompanies the hikers over the entire Salzburger Almenweg.

Approx. 50 m above the Filzmoossattel there is the Filzmooshöhe. A bit different, but a special summit cross awaits you.

When you turn around, you can see the Draugstein, which is majestically towering over the Ellmautal. This mountain is one of three limestone mountains in the valley and the clay on the Draugstein should have healing effects.

The Salzburger Almenweg leads downwards to the Filzmoosalm. The mountain hut is located in an untouched natural landscape. The wide alpine pastures are bordered on the one hand by grass-covered mountain peaks and on the other by the rugged limestones of the Draugstein and the Großer Schneibenstein. After a little refreshment with homemade delicacies, the path leads almost on the same altitude to the Achtalm (closed) and through the Fleischgraben to the Loosbühelalm.

The Loosbühelalm was rebuilt in 2010 after a raging fire. The Loosbühelalm (Klausalm) is a special insider tip especially for friends of goat's milk and goat cheese. Here, besides the traditional snacks with homemade delicacies (not only goat milk, also products of the cow's milk) hot dishes are also offered. Children prefer to spend their time at the playground.

The path leads comfortably to the Weissalm. This centuries-old mountain hut has been carefully restored in the years 1998-2001. On the original, open fire site the Sauerkäse (typical cheese in Grossarltal) is still produced, as generations ago. The loving furnishing of the hut with old tools reminds us of days long gone and the laborious work in the mountains.

You hike further to the Ellmaualm. There you will also find delicacies from the own production and a magnificent mountain panorama.

Accommodation possibilities: Filzmoosalm, Loosbühelalm, Weissalm, Ellmaualm

You can hike from the Filzmoosalm, Loosbühelalm, Weissalm or Ellmaualm to the valley (approx. 1 1/4 h).

Author’s recommendation

For those of you who have enough fitness, a climb to the Draugstein, 2,359 m (about 1 h in one direction) is definitely worth it. The Draugstein is one of the few limestone mountains in the valley and the view is simply gigantic. But ATTENTION: On the last meters you have to be free of dizziness!
