Hüttschlag: 2-days-hiking-tour from Hundegg to the Tappenkarsee
The hike starts at the Hallmoosalm in Hüttschlag. First you have to walk a little bit downwards until you have crossed the Karteisgraben. From here it goes up to the Schleglalm. This mountain hut is closed. You go upwards to the Hundegg. From here you have a beautiful view to Hüttschlag.
Cross the Spielkogel to the Stangersattel, where you will meet the Ellmautal-Höhenweg. Continue to the Filzmooshöhe. A different, but beautiful summit cross, draws all hikers into its spell and brings all to briefly pause. In front of you can see the Draugstein towering majestically over the Ellmautal. This mountain is one of three limestone mountains within the valley.
Finally you reach the Filzmoossattel. Directly at the Filzmoossattel is a particularly beautifully designed gentian, the symbol of the Salzburg Almenweg, which also includes the stage from the Draugsteinalmen to the Filzmoossattel as well as from the Draugsteinalmen to Tappenkarsee and further to the Karteisalm.
Two mountain huts await you on the Draugsteinalm, the left one is the Schrambachhütte, the right one is the Steinmannhütte. On both, there are delicacies from their own production (cheese, butter, bread, bacon, sausage, liquor) and on both you can also stay overnight. But please book the beds in advance! After a delicious breakfast, the path leads to the Draugsteintörl. From here you have a beautiful view to the Tappenkarsee, the largest mountain lake in the Eastern Alps. The descent to the lake is along a hiking path. (Alternatively, you can walk along the ridge to the Kartistörl.)
The Tappenkarsee is supposed to be connected to the Schuhflickersee, since a wagon wheel, which once fell into the Tappenkarsee, has been found in the Schuhflickersee... The Tappenkarseehütte is an alpine club hut and also offers space to stay overnight. The Heidelbeerschmarrn is particularly popular here as well as the Bergsteigergröstl.
After a stop, you hike upwards to the Karteistörl. Here you just have to turn around and have a look at Tappenkarsee. Afterwards you walk to the Karteisalm, which is currently closed. Shortly after the mountain hut is a small well - the water has drinking water quality in our valley. You hike through the forest downwards to the Hallmoosalm, the starting point of the tour.
Author’s recommendation
For those who would like to have a real summit experience: The Draugstein, 2.359 m, would be a great possibility (about 1 h up and 1 h down). The view from up here is simply unique. But ATTENTION: Dizziness and sure-footedness are prerequisites.
